To learn about accessing the Ancestry® account of a person who has passed away, see Requesting Access to the Account of an Ancestry® Member Who Passed Away.
It's not currently possible to transfer ownership of an Ancestry family tree between accounts, but you can share trees and copy trees and people between accounts with the steps below.
Sharing a tree
A tree owner can invite others to view and edit their family tree. A shared tree appears on both the tree owner's account and on the other person's account.
Uploading a copy of a tree to another account
If you have a family tree on one account that you want to copy to another account, you can download the tree in the form of a GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) file from the first account and upload the file to the second account. GEDCOM files are text-only; pictures, charts, books, and similar items from an original tree are not included in a GEDCOM file, so all media will need to be added to the new tree manually. The original tree remains in the original account even after the GEDCOM file of the tree is uploaded to the second account.
Copying people from a tree
To copy a single person from one tree to another (including their birth, death, and marriage information), click TOOLS on the profile page of the person you want to copy and select + Save to Tree. Only one person can be copied at a time. This method can be used both between two trees in the same account and between two trees in separate accounts.
Deleting a tree
If you've moved information from a tree on one account to a tree on another account and want to delete the original tree, see Deleting a Family Tree.
